ViewSonic MB-P702, the color e-reader and HD video player you didn’t yet realize you needed

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, and the same usually goes for tablets. But in the Great Venn Diagram of slate form factors, the ViewSonic MB-P702 seems to hover around the intersection of tablets and e-readers. It’s got a 7-inch 800 x 480 resolution touchscreen LCD display and functions as both an e-reader and a movie player — but not, as far as we can tell, an internet-based experience. Looking to the former function, the MB-P702 reads PDF, TXT, EPUB and others with handwritten notation capabilities. For video, we’re looking at MKV, AVI, WMV, MPG, MP4, and RMVB, with 1080p support and HDMI out. Unfortunately, all we’ve got is rough machine translation and some renders of the product. A sea of 7-inch slates on the horizon — ViewSonic’s own ViewPad 7 included. With any luck, it’s an “optimized experience” (and a competitive price point, knowing the company’s MO) that’d keep it in check.

Yo Nokia, you can keep your E5 and its HD Voice fanciness, we want ourselves an N-KIA E68. Why, we hear the enraged Nokia acolyte ask, why would we defile Nokia’s good name in such a manner? Mostly because this phone has one of the most fun and ingenious slider mechanisms we’ve seen yet. So what if we’ve got no idea what wannabe OS it’s running and so what if it’ll most likely fall apart on us a month into owning it? We still want one, dammit! Video after the break.

Samsung Fascinate review

By now you’ve probably seen the reviews of the other Galaxy S phones — the Epic 4G, Captivate, or Vibrant — or at least gotten an idea of what Samsung’s push into the Android market is all about in 2010. After hitting every other major US carrier with like-minded devices, the company has finally seen fit to unleash the Fascinate on Verizon. Up until this point, the Android offerings on Big Red’s network have been varied, but not all particularly attractive beyond the Droid lineup. The Fascinate is arguably the first handset that gives something like the Droid X or the Incredible a proper run for its money. Of course, those are pretty high stakes in game that changes on an almost daily basis, and Samsung’s options are not without their… idiosyncrasies. That truth is nowhere more pronounced than on its latest handset. So is the company poised to hit the market where it hurts with this final puzzle piece, or is this an incomplete picture? Zune HD taking to the skies with United Airlines in-flight entertainment trial

Microsoft and United hooked up back in June for a hardware-less Zune partnership, which seems to have turned out pretty sweetly for both parties. Dave McLauchlan, chief Zune HD evangelist, has dished the news that the two companies are stepping up their relationship with a set of 500 Zunes being provided for long-haul flights to Hong Kong and Australia. Before you cry foul and say you never get on a flying tin can without your own media, Microsoft’s angle here will be to preload those OLED-sporting babies with exclusive content, including flicks that haven’t yet made it to a DVD release. Dave himself has been running around movie studios and closing deals, while the Zune HDs in question have now been encased in rubber, had their screens protected, and batteries charged. LG’s 180-inch plasma that wasn’t

When we first caught wind of LG’s “180-inch plasma” we were understandably enthused (and just a little skeptical), but our excitement was quickly ruined with word that LG was merely sticking nine 600Hz 60-inch plasmas next to each other and calling it a day. We got a glimpse at the “multi-vision display” (LG shorthand for “a bunch of screens next to each other”) today, and it’s still decently impressive in its own right. LG’s managed to get the seams between the screens down to a mere 1.5mm, and while the lines are still noticeable, they could be a lot worse. While they lines certainly get in the way of entertainment, it actually provides an interesting effect when donning the 3D glasses — almost highlighting the effect of depth. LG has some pretty boring plans for the screens, like digital signage and education, and we’ll be sticking to projectors for our big screen needs, but we’re still saying a 180-inch straight-up, no funny business plasma would be pretty stellar.
