Acroban: the childlike robot you want to punch (video)
We see a lot of robots around here. But few can evoke emotion without resorting to a doe-eyed visage or plush, Dough-Boy bodice. That’s what makes Acroban so interesting. Dispensing with the cheap parlor tricks, Acroban still comes across as child-like, playful, seemingly dependent upon your care and guidance. Cute, even though it’s a quivering mass of aluminum, wire, and servos with a questionable taste in headwear. Doesn’t mean you won’t punch it in the pie hole now and again just to show it who’s boss — it is a murderous robot after all. See what we mean after the break.

NZXT Phantom proves there’s still life in chunky desktop towers
Did the recent reappearance of the Phantom console spark a tiny bit of nostalgia in you? If so, you’ll be happy to hear that NZXT has picked up the moniker for its latest full tower chassis, and it’s a fittingly futuristic-looking beast of burden. The angular steel enclosure provides tool-free access to five 5.25-inch drive bays plus the room to fit in 7 HDDs, 7 fans (up to a mammoth 230mm size), and a dual radiator within its walls. A top-mounted mesh window is accessorized with a slightly more useful array of USB, E-SATA and audio ports, while the innards are specifically designed to accommodate the bulkier graphics cards and CPU coolers out there. Sounds like a winner to us, and the $139.99 price seems about right for a flagship product that aims to tick all the boxes — see the Phantom on video after the break and expect it to arrive, in all its glorious hues, this September.

ChouChou Electric Butterfly flutters to life inside a jar
Most robot pets may not be easily mistaken for the real thing, but that’s not likely to be the case with the ChouChou Electric Butterfly, which might even have a few people reaching to free it from its jar. Unfortunately, it’s the jar that keeps the butterfly “alive” — it has some AA batteries in its lid that apparently allow the butterfly to respond to vibrations and flutter about. That may not sound like much, but the effect is pretty striking — see for yourself after the break. Of course, just because it’s simple doesn’t mean its cheap. You’ll have to shell out a hefty $76 to bring this one home.

CTA announces PS3 Assault Rifle, dignity sold separately
CTA may be best known for its endless array of kid-friendly Wii accessories, but it’s not forgetting about the grown-up gamers out there — or, at least, grown-ups who enjoy shooting plastic guns in their living rooms. Its latest product is the $65 Assault Rifle for the PlayStation 3, which promises to add a whole new degree of “realism and excitement” to games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 — oh, and it also makes sound effects even when you’re not playing a game. Head on past the break for the video.

Microsoft Kin gets a software update, still can’t re-tweet
We’re going to go out on a limb and guess that most folks haven’t been losing sleep over the prospect of a Kin software update (or lack thereof), but those that have been constantly watching their One or Two for a bit of good news can now rest a little easier — sort of. While the Kin has received a software update, it’s not the previously talked about one that would add revolutionary features like Twitter replies and re-tweets. It does add a number of other more minor Twitter updates, however, including Twitter avatars and re-tweets from your contacts in the Kin Loop, and the ability to link your Twitter contacts to your Kin contacts. So, the update still leaves quite a bit to be desired. Kind of fitting, really.

Samsung ST100 and ST600 cams take DualView screens to the high end

Cellphones with front-facing cameras might be all the rage right now, but Samsung continues to lead the field of cameras with front-facing screens — it’s bringing its total count of DualView cameras to six with the new flagship ST100 (pictured) and ST600. In addition to sharing a new larger 1.8-inch front screen, both cams feature the same 14.2 megapixel sensor with ISO 3200 sensitivity, a 3.5-inch rear display, and a new “jump shot” mode that uses the front screen to cue a group of people to jump and then fires off three quick snaps to capture the action. Adorable, we know. You’re also getting 720p video recording, a gesture-driven touchscreen interface, and smart face recognition that can recognize up to six manually chosen people and 14 automatically registered people. The big difference between the two is the lens — the $329 ST600 sports a protruding 5x wide angle optical zoom lens, while the $349 ST100 slims things down with a new 5x internal optical zoom. No exact word on ship dates yet, but you’ll be able to pick both of these up in a variety of metallic colors when they do hit — joy. PR after the break.

Droid 2 being prepared for launch, set to arrive August 23rd?
The Droid 2‘s been leaking out all over the place in the past few weeks, but it looks like it’ll be another month before it officially hits shelves — we just got these shots from a packaging facility that’s handling the phone, which puts it right on schedule for that rumored August 23rd launch. We’re also told that the phone will definitely ship with an 8GB microSD card, and that pricing appears to be $199 on contract and $599 standalone, although those numbers could change. Just a few short weeks left, we suppose — although give the rate at which this thing is leaking, we’re thinking Motorola and Verizon might do well to push that date up a couple weeks. We’ll see.

Zephyr solar UAV sets yet another flight record: 7 days and counting!
This certainly is an interesting time for solar powered flight. Solar Impulse just returned from a 26-hour manned test flight, and now QinetiQ’s Zephyr, a drone who we last saw clocking over 83 hours in-flight is in the air again: this time, it’s more like seven days and counting! The craft, which took off from the Army’s Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona last Friday, is being billed as an “eternal aircraft,” one that can stay aloft for extremely long periods of time for use as recon and communications platforms. The previous world endurance record for a UAV was set by NASA’s Global Hawk, which stayed aloft for 30 hours and 24 minutes.

Ericsson estimates mobile lines have hit 5 billion, gives shout out to China and India for the help
Ericsson — one of the world’s top-tier infrastructure suppliers for mobile networks — has crunched some numbers recently, figuring the five billionth cellphone line came into existence last Wednesday, July 8, largely from major surges in uptake in emerging markets like China and India. Mobile broadband access (which we take to mean access to 3G speeds and beyond) still trails significantly at just 360 million in 2009, though they’re predicting a cool 3.4 billion users by 2015. To put things in perspective, Ericsson points out that we were at 720 million mobile lines in 2000 (and about 2.7 billion in 2007), so that’s some pretty spectacular growth over the decade — particularly considering that we’re coming up on the Earth’s population now. Of course, we don’t know what happens when the world finally has more mobile subscriptions than it has humans — but need we remind you that 2012 is drawing near? Follow the break for the full press release.

XpanD heads to Paris, comes back with Jean Paul Gaultier… in 3D!

The crossroads of fashion and gadgetry is fraught with danger, bad taste, and ill-conceived promotional campaigns. Taking its place among both the Calvin Klein crapgadget and the subtle elegance (and overall silliness) of Sony’s Vaio P campaign, XpanD decided that the the best way to sell consumers on its 3D technology was by following folks like Jean Paul Gaultier and Dita Von Teese around with a 3D camera. So they headed to Paris to film the outrageous clothing and personalities during something called Paris Haute Couture Week. “At XpanD, fashion is a religion-we aim to not only make 3D content look fabulous, but to make the people wearing our glasses look fabulous as well,” says Maria Costeira, XpanD CEO. Sounds great! Because, really, if American consumers are going to be sold on 3D it will be on the runway (and not, say, on the basketball court). Learn all about the XpanD Universal 3D glasses (designed to work with any 3D-enabled device!) in the PR after the break.
