Keepin’ it real fake: N8 available now, only not from Nokia
Well, it was bound to happen: a flagship device released as a KIRF ( for the second time) well ahead of its official launch. Unfortunately, that’s what happens when you delay a product that already leaked months in advance. The $99.20 “N8-00″ might share its name and stylings with Nokia’s imminent Symbian flagship but that’s where the similarities end. This Chinese N8 packs a 3.3-inch touchscreen (resistive, no doubt), a quad-band GSM radio, pair of VGA cameras (ha!), 2GB of MicroSD blah blah blah… hey, let’s be honest, the specs don’t really matter do they? This “Nseries” device, like all KIRFs, will be sold to poseurs who want to look the part before quickly discarding it for the next trend. Picture of the backside after the break.
[Thanks, Arnout and everyone who sent this in]

Stores open early June 4th for EVO 4G with mobile hotspot loophole
When you’ve got the world’s most desired** handset, you don’t keep people waiting. As such, Sprint is recommending that its “preferred retailers” open extra early on June 4th. That should give you a bit of time to grab the new EVO 4G on the way to the office for some good ol’ fashioned bragging rights in the cubicle farm. At least until you remember that one-third of your life is spent working inside of a beige box. Oh and here’s a pro tip: according to the official EVO 4G Launch Guide we’re staring at, the mobile hotspot functionality that turns your EVO into a WiMax hotspot for up to 8 devices will initially work without paying the $29.99 monthly fee if you’re happy with using it on 4G only (no 3G). Sprint expects to correct this sometime in July after which the Sprint Mobile Hotspot add-on will require activation. Read the details for yourself after the break.
** assuming you have WiMax coverage

LG and iriver unveil the LB4400: the Korean Zunephone without the Zune (video)
Little iriver has long been one of our favorite companies when it comes to innovative product design. Unfortunately, the Korean outfit responsible for about half of all digital audio players sold in its home country has all but disappeared from the international stage. Today it returns with the jointly developed LG-LB4400 musicphone. As the name indicates, LG is the muscle behind the cellphone internals (and apparently the industrial design) whereas iriver contributed the media player and UI elements. Specwise, we’re looking at a 2.8-inch WQVGA LCD display, 3 megapixel camera, DMB TV, Dolby Surround Mobile, and support for a wide range of audio codecs including FLAC and APE. No word on price or availability but we’ve got a slow-loading video for you after the break.

Green Samba promises to make electric personal watercraft ‘viable’
It’s not the first to try its hand at an all-electric personal watercraft, but the Ohio-based Silveira Group is claiming that its new so-called Green Samba will be the first “viable” vehicle of its kind. To that end, the company says that the Green Samba will deliver the same 65 mph performance of the fastest 260 bhp sit-down PWCs, and do so while remaining completely silent thanks to a pair of twin direct drive electric propulsion pods. As the company is quick to point out, that also has the added benefit of eliminating one of the biggest complaints about PWCs from the public: their noise. Of course, the other key to viability is the price, and Silveira is unfortunately doing decidedly less talking about that right now, saying only that it will be able to “ballpark a retail price” when it finishes work on the latest prototype in August.

Tranquil PC serves up a pair of high-end but laid-back HTPCs
We haven’t heard from the folks at Tranquil in some time, the UK-based firm’s employees surely too busy watching all the As Time Goes By episodes they stuffed onto their last five-bay media server, but they’ve sent Gene and Lionel on their way and are back to announce two new HTPCs. First is the T7-MP2, a tiny, fanless Ion- and Atom-powered machine that offers HDMI output for direct connectivity to your HDTV and up to 1TB of storage, starting at a rather pricey £479 (about $700). The other is a more powerful beast, the ixVL, coming sometime next month with either an Intel Core i3 or i5 CPU inside and an optical drive (DVD or Blu-ray), but still no fans for quiet operation. No price on this one yet, but expect it to cost, you know, more than the other one.

Intel promises to bring wireless display technology to other mobile devices
Details are unfortunately light on this one, but Intel has closed out the week with one interesting tidbit of news — it’s apparently planning to bring its wireless display technology (a.k.a. WiDi) to netbooks, tablets and other mobile devices. That word comes straight from Intel wireless display product manager Kerry Forrell, who says that “we fully expect to take the technology there,” but that he can’t yet provide a specific time frame. Those plans are further backed up by Intel CEO Paul Otellini himself, who told investors this week that “what we’ll be doing over the next few years is take the Wi-Di capability that’s in the laptop today and extend that into all the Intel platforms.” Intel doesn’t even seem to be stopping there, however, with Forrell further adding that the company even sees the technology being built into to TVs “over time.”

Hackers can remotely disable your car’s brakes, create sensationalist headlines
We think you’re going to be hearing a lot about this one over the next few days… or weeks. A team of researchers at the University of Washington and the University of California San Diego have determined that, with physical access to your car’s ECU, a hacker could “adversarially control a wide range of automotive functions and completely ignore driver input — including disabling the brakes, selectively braking individual wheels on demand, stopping the engine, and so on.” For example, the team was able to connect a computer to a car’s ODB-II port, access that computer wirelessly, and then disable the brakes in the first car while driving down the road in a separate vehicle. The conclusion is that these in-car systems have few if any safeguards in place and, with physical access, nearly anything is possible. The solution, of course, is to prevent physical access. So, if you see a hacker hanging around in your car looking all shady, or a laptop computer sitting in the footwell that totally wasn’t there before, well, you know who to call.

Fourth generation iPhone teardown reveals A4 microprocessor
See the marking on that chip with the Apple logo. No, not the “N90″ codename indicating that it’s from Apple’s next generation GSM iPhone, the other text. If we’re not mistaken then we’re seeing “339S0084″ on that chip from today’s fourth-generation iPhone teardown. Guess what? According to Chipworks, that’s the Apple A4 microprocessor fabricated by Samsung and the presumed work of Apple’s acquired PA Semi and Intrinsity engineers. The “APL0398″ text is also the same as that found on the iPad’s speedy and power sipping A4 system-on-chip. The other markings differ however. What that means isn’t entirely clear yet but we’re digging.
