Hands-On With the Alex: An Android-Powered, Dual-Screen Reader
LAS VEGAS — The Amazon Kindle’s E Ink screen is easy on the eyes for reading, but the software’s really laggy. The iPhone’s touchscreen is slick and fast, but you’ll wear your eyes out reading off it for several hours. What if you combined the benefits of both these products into one? That’s the idea behind [...]

Palm gets serious about 3D gaming on webOS

Palm gets serious about 3D gaming on webOS

Aw, snap! If you thought Apple was the only player in town who could convince gamine execs to walk on stage at and partner up, think again. Palm just announced that a PDK (plugin developer kit) would be loosed at the Game Developers Conference in March, and that’ll enable coders to get their own games onto webOS. In the meanwhile (meaning today), Palm users will be able to sink their teeth into Need for Speed and and Sims 3 (among other titles) thanks to a partnership with EA Mobile. We’re told that “lots” of games will be available in the App Catalog starting today, and the demo shown during the press event was remarkably lag-free. Another neat bit is the ability for games to integrate seamlessly in webOS, so any new texts you receive can be spotted while the game is playing, and if you switch cards to respond, the game just pauses until you return.

Update: The official release is out, and we’re told that titles from EA, Gameloft, Glu Mobile and Laminar Research are available to users today. Head on past the break for a more thorough look.

Lenovo leaks ThinkPad Edge, X100e, T410s, W510, T510 and more ahead of CES

Lenovo leaks ThinkPad Edge, X100e, T410s, W510, T510 and more ahead of CES

Hey Lenovo, your cards are showing. Just weeks after the FCC tipped us off on a new pair of netbooks that are all but definitely slated for a CES unveiling, Lenovo has no one but its web administrator(s) to blame for this one. A “New product showcase” portal over on the outfit’s site has just revealed a half dozen new lappies that are slated to go on sale starting January 5th – 7th, with the ultra-sleek 13.3-inch ThinkPad Edge (pictured above) leading the way. Said rig boasts up to 7.8 hours of battery life, a dual-core CPU, Windows 7, Bluetooth and WiMAX options, integrated WWAN / GPS, WiFi, a spill-resistant keyboard, three USB ports, a 5-in-1 media card reader and an option for a red paint job. There’s also a sub-3 pound ThinkPad X100e ultraportable with an 11.6-inch display, AMD processor and an only-available-overseas Arctic White color option. The T410, T410s, T510 and W510 are bringing up the rear, with their (admittedly brief) specification lists spelled out in the source links below.

[Thanks, Jake and Daniel]

Bikes to Power Times Square New Year Display
Scant decades ago, a ball drop in Times Square was more likely to take place in one of its infamous adult theaters than in the square itself. These days, when there is not even traffic in the iconic plaza, even the historic crystal ball which sees in the New Year is clean. The new energy efficient [...]

A-DATA’s USB 3.0 / SATA II flash drive announced for January

A-DATA’s USB 3.0 / SATA II flash drive announced for January

We’re a few precious breaths from 2010, and if there’s anything we’re looking forward to, it’s some wicked fast USB 3.0 storage — Intel be damned. Set to hit shelves sometime in January, A-DATA’s N002 Combo Flash Drive sports both SATA II and a USB 3.0 connection. Using the latter, the drive boasts up to 200MB/sec read and 170 MB/sec write speeds. Or if you’re feeling retro, you can take advantage of that backwards-compatibility and connect via USB 2.0. Now, we don’t know how much this bad boy will cost, but it will be bundled with A-DATA UFD to GO software. Of course, this thing is not nearly as cute as the Kissing Octopus USB drive, but we’re sure it’s not without its charms.
