Apple patent application details universal iPhone / iPod dock
Don’t get your hopes up too much just yet, but it looks like you might one day no longer need to detangle a USB cable or fiddle with a plastic dock adapter the next time you want to charge or sync your iPhone or iPod. That’s if this this recently revealed patent application for a new type of universal dock from Apple turns into an actual product, at least. The secret to the dock, such as it is, is that the base would be made of an elastic, sponge-like substance that could conform to any device and hold it in place. What’s more, the dock would apparently even be able retain the imprint of your device for convenient use next time, and be reset at the push of the button to let you use it with another device — we’re not quite sure how this thing is supposed to hold up a tablet, though.

Apple ordered to pay damages in Opti patent case, Apple appeals
Full-time IP licensor Opti sure has been keeping itself busy in the last few years suing the likes of NVIDIA, AMD and Apple, and it looks like its case with the latter may now finally be drawing to a close. After a few years of battling it out in the courts in Texas, the judge in the case has ordered Apple to pay Opti $19 million for three instances of patent infringement, as well as $2.7 million in pre-judgment interest. The judge didn’t find that Apple willfully violated the patents in question, however, which concern a memory access technology known as predictive snooping (hence the relatively small damages). Apple apparently isn’t quite ready to call it a day just yet though, and has reportedly already filed a formal appeal to have the case overturned.

HP lets iPAQ Glisten out of the box
The AT&T-bound iPAQ Glisten from HP has been unboxed for our viewing pleasure, video of which can be found immediately after the break. If you’re not in such a hurry though, you’ll want to know it’s an AMOLED-fronted, Qualcomm-powered (533MHz) WinMo 6.5 device, which brings the BlackBerry form factor sans the RIM user experience, but plus a touchscreen. Another thing to note is that AT&T’s online store will be the only place to get it, at the already announced $179.99 after rebates on a two-year deal. The video does a good job of comparing HP’s return to the mobile space with a pair of similar devices, and we’re left with the impression that it’s a pretty chunky machine, but as usual we recommend seeing it for yourself — and you already know where to find it.

Intel SSD firmware 02HD brings back Trim support, sans bugs
Intel’s 34nm X25-M G2 drives might not’ve had the most peaceful of existences so far, but you can’t fault the company’s efforts to fix whatever maladies have popped up. The latest firmware update from Santa Clara brings back the lauded Trim support, but this time leaves the drive-killing antics behind. User experiences so far have been positive, though unsurprisingly a couple of people have questioned whether Trim is in fact enabled on their drives — clearly, the difference between fast and really, really fast is not as distinguishable as we like to think. The source link will provide you with the latest firmware update tool and the precious new code — if you dare risk it.
[Thanks, Alex]
