Clearwire’s $150 dual-mode WiMAX / Sprint CDMA modem launches Sunday
Yup, it’s true, the dual-mode CDMA / WiMAX modem is real and will be sold by Clearwire Sprint starting December 21st. The $150 device (after $50 rebate and two-year Sprint contract) is a first to function on both Sprint’s EV-DO network and Clearwire’s nascent mobile WiMAX service currently supporting Baltimore’s collection of kitschy beauty salons. So yeah, the modem is of limited interest until Clearwire can build-out its network in 2009, starting with Portland in early January.

TomTom DUB1 navigator works in-dash or on-the-go
They’re far from common, but we’ve definitely seen modular GPS concepts before. If this leaked FCC documentation is any gauge of reality, however, TomTom will be making those wild, wild dreams into something entirely more tangible. The DUB1 is an up and coming navigator which is designed to operate in a snap-in portal located in your nearest dashboard or in the palm of your nearest hand. It’s likely that said portal will be a double-DIN aftermarket accessory, but we suppose TomTom could nail down contracts with automakers to provide it from the factory. There’s little left to do but wait and see, but given just how nuts Garmin went at CES 2008, don’t be shocked to see this as one of the many coming from its main rival in just under a month.

MEMS gyroscopes rumored to hit array of phones in 2009
Details on this one are freakishly scarce, but DigiTimes has it that a number of recognizable handset makers are looking to incorporate MEMS gyroscopes into their 2009 smartphones. It’s anticipated that such devices would be used to sense motion in one form or another, with brands like Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and Apple (we know you’re thinking, so stop) expected to welcome the tech with open arms. So, why the sudden interest in G-sensors? Falling prices, of course — and the natural expectation of consumers for their future phones to be entirely more sensitive to their feelings than the one they’re using currently.

Wearable toy piano makes music, looks good doing it
Now here’s a concept. A musical shirt with enough transistors to make even the hardest of hardcore nerd blush, and a long-sleeve garment fashionable enough to make even the world-class design student stop and admire. Mashed into one. The Musical toy piano shirt is that very piece, which was constructed to wow onlookers at the Electronic Textile workshop held this month in Switzerland. Packing removable batteries, speakers and circuitry, the shirt enables the wearer to emit eight different notes from Do to Do, and we hear there’s nothing quite as cute as playing a song on yourself. See what we mean in the vid hosted just after the break.

Rumored Intel roadmap names next Atom “Medfield”
Rumors are swirling about Intel’s roadmap of forthcoming netbook and handheld processors, which apparently showed up in a recent report by UBS. The roadmap seems to confirm the previously seen Pineview, and codenames its successor “Medfield,” which is to be built on 32-nanometer process technology. Pineview, after some speculation, seems to have been nailed down as a 45-nanometer chip, and will be released in 2009, while Medfield, a complete system-on-chip, will follow in 2010. Medfield will have two variants, one for netbooks rumored to use the current integrated GPU, and one for MIDs, which is said to carry a PowerVR graphics core like the one used in the iPhone. Intel has apparently confirmed the codename “Medfield,” but, when questioned, wouldn’t answer to allegations that the person who’d come up with the moniker had been fired on grounds of being the least creative namer in the history of naming.

Android 1.0 gets ported to the Nokia N810
We’ve already seen a pre-release version of Android ported to the Nokia N810, but the folks at Linux consulting firm NthCode have now finally taken things to their logical conclusion and finagled version 1.0 of the OS onto the handheld and, best of all, they’ve described the entire process in minute detail. While the OS itself more or less works, they apparently still have quite a ways to go, as the device is currently not able to do some little tasks like run applications, charge the battery, or access the internet. But, hey, it’s Android on an N810, we’re not about to get picky. Head on past the break for a video, and hit up the link below for the complete details.
[Thanks, Addae]

HP Mini 1000 to get $40 price cut
What’s this? A $40 price cut on an item that’s likely on at least one gift list that you’re currently staring at? Huzzah! Unless, of course, you’re one of those proactive individuals who went out and already nabbed one. In all seriousness, Laptoping has reportedly received an email notification from Hewlett-Packard that the sleek and sexy Mini 1000 netbook will stoop to $359.99 starting tomorrow. That’ll net you an 8.9-inch panel, Atom N270 CPU (1.6GHz), 1GB of RAM, an 8GB SSD, 3-cell battery and Windows XP Home. There’s no word on whether the stylish Vivienne Tam Edition will receive a drop of her own, but we wouldn’t count on it (yet).

New firmware unlocks GPS on Verizon-branded Pearls and Curves, carrier’s intentions unclear
If you’ve been itching to get your GPS on but weren’t feelin’ the $9.99 monthly charge for VZ Navigator, today is a good day. Verizon 8330 Curve and 8130 Pearl devices have finally been (somewhat) decrippled, as users over at HowardForums are reporting that the GPS in the aforementioned devices started working once they applied the 4.5.0.97 update. As this is an unreleased firmware version, we’re unsure if this was an intentional measure, or simply an epic mistake. But one thing we’re sure about is that if Verizon does shut this down in the next firmware update, the backlash will surely be enough to whip up one heck of a Storm. Unfortunately at this point, it’s only working in BlackBerry Maps, while Google Maps is left out of the party; but hey, we’ll take whatever we can get.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II unboxed
It’s been on sale for a couple days now (at least in Shanghai), so it had to happen eventually — you’re witnessing the first tentative breaths of a Canon EOS 5D Mark II as it leaves the box. So many manuals to ignore! So many useless composite video cables and driver CDs to fill your drawers! So much bubble wrap to spend intimate moments with! It all goes down at the read link, kids.
